Tuesday, 24 August 2010

The pure tie of love between a brother and a sister is one of the genuine and noblest of human emotions. ‘Raksha Bandhan’ or ‘Rakhi’ is an exclusive occasion to have enjoyment this emotional bonding by tying a holy thread around the wrist. This thread, which pulsates with sisterly love and inspiring sentiments, is truly called the ‘Rakhi’. It is‘a bond of protection’, and Raksha Bandhan indicates that the strong must protect the weak from all that’s sin.
Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shraavana.

History
The Shravana or the monsoon month carries all colors and shades of nature and emotions. Religiously talking Shravan is a spiritual month and full moon of this special month is considered to be a very holy day. It is celebrated in various ways for different reasons almost all over the country.
For the siblings it is the everlasting bond of love, for Brahmins the day to take the oath of Brahmanik rites and for those who depend sea and monsoon, it is the commencement of the new season.

Indian festivals are related on the weather changes and their significance in the lives of people but they do have a story to back the celebrations. The prosperous Indian Mythology gives a religious cause to celebrate the day in an precise way. Quite a few epics are related to the day and the start of Raksha Bandhan. The festival finds a reference in most of the epics and its source can be traced back to the mythological Pouranik times.

Why Rakhi?

Rituals like Rakhi, there is definitely, help make easier a variety of community strains, induce fellow-feeling, open up channels of expression, and give us a chance to rework on our responsibility as human beings and, most considerably, bring joy in our normal lives.
“May all be happy
May all be free from ills
May all behold only the good
May none be in distress.”

This has always been the thought of an ideal Hindu society.

Importance

Although it is well thought-out as a brother and sister festival, it was not at all times true. There have been instances in history where in rakhi has just been a raksha or protection. It could also be tied by wife, a daughter or mother. The Rishis tied rakhi to the people who came looking for their blessings. The sages tied the holy thread to themselves to defend them from the immoral. It is by all means the ‘Papa Todak, Punya Pradayak Parva’ or the day that bestows boons and ends all sins as it is mentioned in the scriptures.

The Friendly Knot

It won’t be incorrect to say the stylish friendship band in trend nowadays is an expansion of the Rakhi custom. When a girl feels a friend of the opposite sex has developed a sort of love too strong for her to react, she sends the guy a Rakhi and turns the relationship into a sisterly one. This is one means of saying, “let’s just be friends”, without aching the other person’s soft feelings for her.
